Research exchange

Visiting our group

Our group regularly hosts visiting PhD students and researchers from universities in the Netherlands and abroad. Visitors work on a joint research project with members of the group and take part in group meetings and seminars.

Recent visiting researchers include:

  • Guilherme de Oliveira Mendes Ohira (Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil): machine learning-augmented optimization for computational strain design.
  • Taeyong Woo (Kyung Hee University, South Korea, since July 2026): generative AI, reinforcement learning, and multi-agent systems for the design of wastewater treatment processes.
  • Marco Brendolan (University of Padova, Italy): graph neural networks and multi-agent systems in chemical engineering.

We also work with associated PhD candidates from other universities, such as Tolga Dinc from KU Leuven (Belgium).

In the past, we have hosted, for example, master students from RWTH Aachen University and Politecnico di Milano, visiting research interns from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and honors project students from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

Going abroad for a research project

Living, working, and studying abroad has many advantages: it increases the awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity and improves language and communication skills. We support exchange programmes for our students and help them find partner universities, so that TU Delft students can go abroad for a research project during their MSc in Chemical Engineering.

We have an established connection with RWTH Aachen University (Germany); see the RWTH page for incoming exchange students. We are open to collaborations with other international universities in computational methods, optimization, and machine learning in process systems engineering. If you are interested in a research exchange during your master's, please contact us.
