pyDEXPI 1.0 released on PyPI

We released version 1.0.0 of pyDEXPI, our open-source Python package for the DEXPI standard for Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). It can now be installed directly from PyPI with pip install pydexpi.

DEXPI (Data Exchange in the Process Industry) is a vendor-independent information model for machine-readable P&IDs. pyDEXPI implements the DEXPI data model as Python classes and includes a parser that loads Proteus XML files exported from engineering software. P&IDs can then be processed in Python, for example converted into graphs for machine learning.

pyDEXPI is developed by Dominik P. Goldstein, Lukas Schulze Balhorn and Anggawirya Alimin and is the basis for much of our work on generative AI for engineering diagrams, including P&ID autocorrection and ChatP&ID. The accompanying paper was presented at ESCAPE35 in July 2025: D. P. Goldstein, L. Schulze Balhorn, A. A. Alimin, A. M. Schweidtmann. pyDEXPI: A Python framework for piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) using the DEXPI information model. Version 1.1.0 followed on 3 September 2025 with a refactored Proteus parser and documentation of the graph format for machine learning. The source code, release notes and examples are on GitHub.
